John Schlitt
John Schlitt is an American rock singer whose voice, faith, and journey have made him a beloved figure in both mainstream and Christian music. Schlitt’s career took off in the 1970s when he fronted the rock band Head East, earning acclaim for his fiery tenor and powerful stage presence. After leaving Head East in 1980 — amid struggles with addiction — John experienced a life-changing conversion that realigned his priorities and renewed his purpose.
In 1986, Schlitt was invited by Petra founder Bob Hartman to join the Christian rock band Petra, ushering in what would become a defining era for both him and the band. In the 1980s and 90s, John helped Petra release some of its most successful albums, garner multiple Dove and Grammy awards, and two Gold-certified releases, while touring across all fifty U.S. states and more than 35 countries.
Parallel to his work with Petra, Schlitt has pursued a solo path that reflects his personal growth. His solo albums — including Shake (1995), Unfit for Swine (1996), The Grafting (2008), The Greater Cause (2012) and Go (2020) — showcase not just his vocal power, but a more intimate, honest songwriting rooted in redemption, faith, and real life.
Today Schlitt remains active in music, performing with Petra, as a solo artist, with the Union of Sinners and Saints, and with various other collaborative projects, while speaking openly about his past, his faith, and the sustaining power of grace.
